How phenomenal that a 19 year old thought to tell his folks to save his letters The daily life of simple folks always interest me This account is especially detailed Daniel even took pains to do what I would call a Who s Who, rank and vital statistics at the back of the book The letters did describe the tragic scenes of war, including what happened to deserters Thankfully it was not dwelled upon The events did make an impression to them that they would not forget If you are a Civil War buff, this is a good read. Book Sale find. ✓ Civil War Notebook of Daniel Chisholm ✓ I overheard someone reading a passage from this as we were both browsing the sale books carts outside of one of my favorite book stores It was an excerpt from the letters collected in this book written by Daniel Chisholm, 116th Pennsylvania Volunteers In that passage Daniel noted that he had been out doing skirmish drill for much of the day not just drill but skirmish drill I was already strongly interested and moved around to the cart and fished out the book as soon as the reader had put it back and moved away When I realized that Chisholm served in the 116th Pennsylvania, which joined the Irish Brigade at the same time as the 28th Massachusetts Volunteers just before the Battle of Fredericksburg , I was hooked for certain as the Irish Brigade has been a subject of strong interest for almost two decades now The 116th, of course, was not Irish, but Chis This was so interesting to me I love reading about history, but this was even better because it was first hand accounts and descriptions I loved the little diary entries by Samuel Clear The compilers really stayed true to the form of notebook it was Very cool.
I read excerpts form this book to elementary students when we were learning about the Civil War It is so muchpowerful for the students to hear words from people that were actually involved primary sources than to read a summary in a text book.
