This book couldn’t seem to decide if it wanted to be an architecture book, a photography book, or a rambling stream of consciousness from the overly fanciful brain of Laughlin. Frankly, I couldn’t stand the author’s anthropomorphizing of every tree, pillar, and clump of Spanish moss. The flowery, artsy descriptions were so unnecessary. The photographs themselves expressed everything that needed to be said from the beauty of long ago architectural achievement to the sad depression of neglect and loss. Words really weren’t needed other than the histories of the houses and the people whose vision and talent built them. I also didn’t think photos that were Important Edit of Review at the end of the review, a note about a slave revolt.
The photography here is Stunning Important
Like all writing about culture, the writer reveals limitations of cultural understanding. Laughlin is no different. As I write this appreciative review, I know I too offend some/all descendents of black slaves. These houses were built near the River which runs it's own courses and considers not at all what it destroys as it twists, turns, and makes lakes of parts of itself it no longer wants. Despite knowing the changeability of the River, people built sometimes fine sturdy homes and sometimes serviceable sturdy homes. They always built with great intention to conti
Once upon a time, my husband and I went on our honeymoon in romantic New Orleans. We visited River Road and her beautiful homes. This was in 1971 and we discovered Three Oaks Plantation that was falling down and surrounded by oil tanks. We had to trespass and explore. On a crumbling staircase, I am sure my leg was gently touched by a gown.
Essence of Magnolias fill the night to glisten with a fusion of time and light.
Along muddy Mississippi banks lay ruins of vine encrusted cypress walls.
Gentle ghosts of old joys and fears haunt us while living in enchanting halls.
In the tenderness of years, loveliness sweeps the heartstrings.
Nostalgia and beauty transcend decay.
Remember times of graciousness, shimmers of dancing water, graceful sun rays.
Stolen kisses seen by knowing eyes I have a first edition copy of this book from the 1940s. It is AWESOME if you can find it! When I move to NOLA I want this book to be my guide and take pictures of the same places, if they still even exist! Not only the pictures, but, the stories are priceless.
