It's been a while since I read this book. I seem to remember it was very simplenot merely ESL simple, but the content was overly simplified. If I remember correctly, it somewhere talks about Americans (For this book, we are all AmericansCanadians included) not taking their shoes off at home. Yet, we always did in my home. Most people I know are not eager to have shoes tramp across their carpet.
Anyway, it is a good introduction for people new to either culture.
Disclosure: I worked for Dr Min in Seoul and may have read the book for free. For those looking for Hagwon work in Seoul, I was entirely satisfied with the work and the contract at his hagwon ("BCM English" in English). Very helpful for any American or Korean working between the two cultures. Also great to use with students if you are teaching English to Koreans. They also have one for Ugly Chinese and Ugly Japanese. Maybe some for other cultures somewhere, too. So very, very not PC. However, one of the most useful books in preparing for a move to Korea. It gives (perhaps oversimplified but useful) snippets of things each culture does that confounds the others and explains at least briefly why the confusion. I don't think it's in print anymore, but you can easily find cheap versions on Amazon.
I remember reading the illustrations four years ago and thought many of the cultural differences were true on both sides. I laughed and shook my head throughout both different cultural groups. I'm curious to see if the cultural differences still apply today. This book describes some things Koreans do that might confuse/offend Westerners and viceversa. Most of the behaviors are real but the explanations are simplistic. è Ugly Koreans, Ugly Americans è I was given this book in Korea to help me adjust to Korean culture. I know some things are not quite accurate, but it was still a useful book.
